Should you fake it ’til you make it?

Should you fake it ’til you make it?

Have you heard the expression fake it til you make it?

I think there’s some merit in it.  Like when you’re pretending you have the courage to stand up and talk to a group of people.

Sometimes that kind of faking can get you through.

It can help you do something your comfort zone really doesn’t want you to do.

So your life gets bigger.

But then there’s that belief that faking it is somehow necessary because you’re not enough.

That to show imperfection is to be weak or tarnished or less valuable. That somehow it will put-people-off or repel them from your business.

It’s easy to slip into thinking that perfection is the only way to silence critics and skeptics.  The only way to inspire your team.

But in reality, trying to be perfect just makes you seem phoney.

I know because I’ve done it myself.

Far from silencing critics, this phoney-ness is part of the reason NWM gets such a bad rap.

Very, very slowly it dawned on me:

By trying to be perfect enough to be attractive, I was actually making my business toxic.

So by all means fake it til you make it around stuff like public speaking, picking up the phone, staying calm while you take an enormous order…

But don’t fake being you.

Because it actually is possible to fake it until you’re just fake all the way through.

And that’s not a fabulous way to live.

See you on the road,

Helen x

PS This blog is about perfectionism too – it’s one of my favourites:

Hi, I'm Helen Jamieson, the author of The Networker - a novel created from experiences on the road to creating over USD $1million with my network marketing business. The book is a fable, a novel, about Sally, a feisty mother of two young children. Sally's feeling exhausted by her job, her lack of money and her negative spouse. Surely successful people didn't have to deal with obstacles like hers? The story follows her into, under and round those obstacles on her quest to take back control of her life using network marketing.
