Solving Rabbit In The Headlights

Have you ever noticed how stiff people can become when they are trying to shoot video?

Not the goofing off, home movie kind of video.

But the ‘I’m talking to the camera and trying to convey information’ kind of video.

All the personality can drain out of a person.

They become hyper-aware of how they seem– and so they take on a wooden, stiff veneer that makes them totally unrelatable.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about just try it now yourself.

Whip out your cell phone, switch the video onto selfie…and talk to camera for more than a minute:

Make the topic ‘my business’ and imagine an unseen audience looks on from YouTube.

Did you get that ‘rabbit in the headlights’ feeling?

Well, here’s a newsflash:

Worrying about how you seem can do that to you.

I see it a lot in business.

One minute you’re rocking along being yourself in a conversation with someone.

The next your business pops up on your internal radar and you go all stiff and self-aware.

I know when I’m looking at myself from behind someone else’s eyes I just can’t enjoy being in my own skin the same way.

It robs me of my technicolour.

It’s a subtle shift but try this:

Be more aware of the person you’re talking to, than about how you seem to them.

That sincerity creates a lightness in daily life that’s SO much more satisfying (and so much less exhausting) than constantly ‘image-managing’.

See you on the road,

PS Is there someone you know who needs to realise they’re allowed to be themselves as they build their business?  Then share this with them – it could make all the difference.

Hi, I'm Helen Jamieson, the author of The Networker - a novel created from experiences on the road to creating over USD $1million with my network marketing business. The book is a fable, a novel, about Sally, a feisty mother of two young children. Sally's feeling exhausted by her job, her lack of money and her negative spouse. Surely successful people didn't have to deal with obstacles like hers? The story follows her into, under and round those obstacles on her quest to take back control of her life using network marketing.

  • Great blog! Yes as soon as I’m faced with an audience I go all stiff & my bubbly personality goes off center. I definitely need to work on this.
    Thanks
